Two Stabbed in Canada Gurdwara; Anti-Sikh Hate Crimes Rose by 25% in 2025

Two men, 75 and 51-year-old, were stabbed by a 27-year-old man with a screwdriver early morning on 21 Aug, during a gathering at a Nanaksar Gurdwara, Edmonton, Canada. Their identities have not been revealed. Police said the suspect is known to them and has a 'significant history of violent offences'. He was released from prison a day before he committed the crime. The Edmonton Police Services hate crimes unit has been engaged to help with the investigation. The World Sikh Organization, based in Canada, has said the attack is deeply troubling and has occurred against the backdrop of rising anti-Sikh hate across the country. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and other leaders have condemned the attack. Meanwhile, three pro-Khalistan activists in Canada have received police 'duty to warn' over 'credible and imminent' threats to their lives. A 'duty to warn' notice is issued when police have credible intelligence indicating a potential threat to an individual’s life. Such warnings generally do not disclose the specific nature, source or details of the threat. The warnings have been issued to Surrey-based Narinder Singh Randhawa, Caledon-based Inderjeet Singh Gosal, and Abbotsford-based Manjinder Singh. Additionally, on 14 Aug, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released their 2025 hate crimes data. While the overall hate crimes saw a slight decrease of 7% since 2024, anti-Sikh hate crime incidents increased by 25%—from 142 in 2024 to 189 in 2025. US-based advocacy group, Sikh Coalition said, ‘The anti-Sikh hate crimes peaked in September 2025 to nearly one per day on average. This was the month following the high-profile roadway accident involving truck driver Harjinder Singh in Florida.’ Sikh Coalition Senior Federal Policy Manager Mannirmal Kaur said, 'Minority and immigrant populations have faced an openly hostile political and social climate. Sikhs specifically have been one of many groups in the spotlight, from discrimination against and targeting of Sikh truck drivers to fear-mongering around Sikh articles of faith from the highest levels of our government.' Concurrently, 28-year-old Gurdeep Singh from Begowal village, Kapurthala was shot dead by an unidentified shooter while he was out delivering pizza in New York City.
